When Students Remain In Placement
Overview
This article explains why you may see some Core5 or PowerUp students listed as being “In Placement” in myLexia for an extended amount of time.
Applies to: Educators and administrators who have Teacher or Admin access to myLexia
What do I do when my student remains “In Placement” for a long time?
There are several reasons why a student may take longer than average to finish Auto Placement for a Lexia program:
-
The student is far below or far above grade level. Placement may take longer for students whose skills are either far below or far above grade level. This is because the placement activities may need to scaffold up or down through multiple levels in order to determine their current skill level.
-
There is an audio issue. Since Core5 and PowerUp require that the student be able to hear audio instructions, it may help to confirm with the student that their sound is turned on and that they can hear the instructions. Headphones are recommended.
-
There is an issue preventing the student from advancing. It may help to have an adult monitor the student to ensure that they are not experiencing an issue that affects their progress. For example, you might check if the student is accidentally refreshing the page or using the back/forward arrows in the browser (both of these will cause the student to be logged out). You might also have them either try taking Auto Placement on a different device if they have one available, or switching to another browser if they are on a computer or laptop. See System Requirements for details on supported browsers.
-
The student is an emergent bilingual. To best determine the student’s current English literacy skills, Native Language Support is not available during Auto Placement, so placement activities may take longer for students whose native language is not English. If language support is enabled for a student, they will hear an introduction and conclusion in their native language, but Auto Placement will be entirely in English.
If a student has difficulty completing the Auto Placement, you have the option of manually placing the student. This way, you can place the student at the level that you feel is appropriate for them, and they will not need to complete the placement test. See Change Student Placement in Core5 or Change Student Placement in PowerUp.
