Roster Students and Classes (Spreadsheet Upload)
Overview
Administrators can create and/or modify existing student accounts in myLexia by importing comma-separated (.csv) or tab-separated (.tsv) spreadsheet files. Including the optional class column in the student import will also allow you to create or modify classes.
You can use Manual imports to:
Create new student accounts
Modify some aspects of existing student accounts (e.g. move students to a different school, promote students’ grade levels)
Create classes and assign students to those classes
Modify existing classes
You can not use Manual imports to:
Delete existing student accounts
Delete existing classes
Modify existing student usernames, first names, last names, and middle initials
If you only need to create a handful of students, see Create Individual Student Accounts.
Applies to: Educators and administrators who have School Admin or District Admin access to myLexia.
School administrators within a district can only run manual imports and exports if "Allow School Admins to run imports & exports" is enabled in the site settings (under Data Security). If you are a school administrator and do not see the Import or Export options in myLexia, talk to your myLexia district administrator for help.
Does not apply to: Educators with Teacher or Read-Only access in myLexia.
How do I prepare a student file for manual import?
First, you’ll create a spreadsheet with student information. You can start with a template from Lexia (linked below) or create your own file. If you export from your student information system (SIS), you can modify the column headers and content of your export to match Lexia’s template.
Your student import should include the following fields: First Name, Last Name, Username, Password, Grade, and School. To assign students to classes, include a class name in the Class column.
Fields for Manually-Uploaded Student Accounts details all of the required and optional fields for the student import files, and contains additional information about using the Class column.

Make sure to save the file as a comma-separated (.csv) or tab-separated (.tsv) file. If you try to import an Excel file (.xls or .xlsx), there will be an import error.
Import Type | Link to Template File (right-click and choose “download in new tab” |
Student (US, Canada) | https://www.lexialearningresources.com/cs/downloads/StudentImport_US.csv |
Student (UK, NZ, AU) | https://www.lexialearningresources.com/cs/downloads/StudentImport_UK.csv |
The import templates contain only the required columns and the optional Class column. You can add additional column headings for the optional fields, but they must follow the accepted format.
How do I upload my student file to myLexia?
Once you have prepared the student import file, you can upload it using the Manual Import function in myLexia.
In myLexia, select Manage, and then Students at the top of the page.
Select the Import button.
Select the Choose File button and navigate to the import file on your computer. After you choose the file, select the Continue button.
Select the radio buttons for Import new students and/or Import modified students.
Verify the number of students, classes, and/or schools that will be created and/or modified upon importing.
Select Import
The green Success screen displays the results of the import.
What if I receive an error?
To address any errors, select Download Error Report to view them. The last column in the spreadsheet, “Error,” explains the error.
For a description of each error code, and for more help troubleshooting manual import errors, see Troubleshooting manual import errors
Why don’t I see the Import or Export buttons?
You will only see the Import or Export buttons if you have permission to run imports and exports. If you are a school admin in a district account, it could be that the ability for school admins to run imports and exports is not enabled in your district. Please contact your district admin for assistance.
I don’t see an Import button - just an Export button!
The Import button is not available if you have any students selected. If you see that students are selected (that is, the boxes to the left of their names are checked off), uncheck the boxes to deselect them (or select the box with the minus sign next to the header “Student Name” to deselect all students). Once all students have been deselected, the Import button should become available.
Do I have to include every student in each import file?
You do not! Manual imports only add or modify—they don’t archive or delete student accounts, so you can use incremental imports to update your student rosters in myLexia.
