What is Listen Mode in PowerUp?

Overview

Listen Mode is a feature available during certain tasks in Lexia​®​ PowerUp Literacy​®. The Listen Mode button allows students to select text and have it read aloud to them.

This article answers some frequently asked questions about Listen Mode in PowerUp.

When is Listen Mode available in PowerUp?

The Listen Mode button is available during select tasks in the Comprehension and Grammar strands. In the Comprehension strand, Listen Mode is available during skill strategy modeling. In the Grammar strand, it is available during direct instruction for certain tasks.

Listen Mode is not available in the Word Study strand.

How do students access Listen Mode?

To access Listen Mode in a PowerUp activity, students can select the speaker icon, and select the Listen Mode headphones icon from the dropdown menu. The icon will be dark blue if it is available for the activity.

When Listen Mode is on, the student can select any text they want the program to read out loud to them.

The student will not be able to answer questions while in Listen Mode. They must exit Listen Mode to answer questions.

What does the screen look like when a student is in Listen Mode?

When a student is in Listen Mode, blue banners appear at the top and bottom of the screen. The banner at the top says Listen Mode, and the banner at the bottom says Press here to exit.

How can I tell if a student used Listen Mode in an activity?

A student’s Skills Report shows where they have accessed Listen Mode.

To see where a student has used Listen Mode:

  1. In myLexia, select Reading.

    • If you have Administrator access in myLexia: Select a school and/or a class.

    • If you have Teacher access in myLexia: You will see the class overview for your assigned class. If you have multiple classes, select My Other Classes to switch between your classes.

  2. From a Class Overview, select a student’s name. Alternatively, search a student’s name in the search bar and select their name.

  3. From the student overview, select Skills Report.

  4. Next to View Strand, select which strand you would like to view.

    Listen Mode is only available in the Comprehension and Grammar strands.

  5. If there is a headphones icon next to an activity name, it indicates that the student accessed Listen Mode at least once in that activity.

Can I turn off Listen Mode for a student?
