Why can’t I install Core5 on a phone?

Program goals and objectives

Lexia developed Core5 to provide high-quality literacy instruction in a focused learning environment. Given the goals and objectives of the program (reading acceleration for K-5 students of all abilities) and Core5’s primary use in schools, we developed the Core5 app with an initial focus on computers, Chromebooks, and tablets, rather than phones.

User interface designed for younger children

Core5’s user interface takes into account the developmental needs of younger children. The amount of information on the screen is specifically designed to promote engagement and help students focus on the task at hand. Font size and spacing were chosen carefully to support the needs of all readers, especially early readers. To accommodate young students’ dexterity, our designers included larger type and buttons. To promote clarity of purpose and avoid involuntary actions, we chose interaction types that are relatively simple for younger students -- drag and drop, single tap, etc.. These details require more screen real estate than most phones provide.

Multi-paragraph texts

Some higher Core5 levels require students to navigate multi-paragraph, academic texts, and these activities are not suitable for use on a phone.

Processing and storage considerations

Due to its robust content, Core5 requires processing and storage capabilities that are not available on most phones. Program content includes:

  • Personalized instructional support

  • High-definition audio features

  • Visually engaging and motivating creative elements, such as 3-D animations

  • Interactive supports, such as pop-up screens, that provide increased support for instruction.
