Lexia English: Best Practices for Speech Recognition

While working in Lexia English Language Development™, students practice their speaking skills through conversations with the program’s characters. This article describes some tips and best practices for working with the speech recognition engine in Lexia English.

What kind of headset do students need to interact with Lexia English?
Students need a headset equipped with a microphone so that the program can hear them, and they can hear the program.
If students don’t have a headset with a microphone, they can use their computer or tablet’s built-in microphone—just make sure that they work in a very quiet area with little background noise.
Bluetooth headsets and earbuds are not supported.
What are some best practices when using the Speech Recognition Engine?
Get ready!
Have students plug their headset into their computers or devices before they log on to Lexia English.
Microphone position and speaking volume
If students use a headset, have them position the microphone so that it is about two finger widths from the corner of their mouth.
Students should speak in a clear, indoor voice, at the same volume as if they were speaking to someone sitting near them.
Remind students to sit up straight and tall, and speak directly into the microphone.
Reduce background noise
Have students work in a quiet area if possible.
In the classroom, make sure that students have adequate space between them.
