PowerUp Skill Checks: Student Experience
Overview
Skill Checks are curriculum-embedded assessments that check student understanding at strategic points in Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®. Skill Checks are designed to be brief, and are closely tied to the curriculum.
This article gives educators an overview of the student experience for PowerUp Skill Checks.
When do students encounter Skill Checks?
Word Study and Grammar strands: After students finish the instructional content in each level of the PowerUp Word Study and Grammar strands, they move on to the Skill Check section for that level..
Comprehension strand: Skill checks occur after the middle and end of each Zone in the Comprehension Strand, (Level 3, Level 6, Level 9, Level 12, Level 14, and Level 16). After students finish the instructional content in each of these levels, they move on to the Skill Check for that level.
How long does it take students to complete Skill Checks?
Each Word Study and Grammar Skill Check consists of four units, based on a set of key skills from the level. Each Skill Check in these strands includes 24 questions.
Each Comprehension Skill Check consists of two or three passages with multiple choice questions. Each Skill Check in this strand includes 12 questions.
The time it takes a student to complete a Skill Check unit varies, based on the student and on the PowerUp level in which they are working . Most students will need less than ten minutes to finish a Skill Check in PowerUp.
Because Skill Checks don't have instructional branching, a Skill Check unit takes less time to complete than a typical PowerUp unit.
What happens after students complete Skill Checks for a level?
After completing all of the Skill Checks for a level, students see a celebration for completing that level and move on to the next level!
Student streaks (counts of continuous correct answers) are no longer suspended.
