My student got a lower score on a Skill Check—why are they still advancing in PowerUp?

Overview

In Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, Skill Check performance does not affect whether students will move forward in the program. This is by design, as Skill Checks are intended to provide a quick check for learning, and to be considered alongside other program data points for a comprehensive picture of student performance.

This article explains why students will advance in PowerUp after taking Skill Checks scores and how to use Skill Check data to inform instruction.

Why is my student advancing in PowerUp even though they scored low in a Skill Check?

Skill Checks are part of Lexia’s embedded assessment system, which prioritizes assessing the context of day-to-day learning. They are designed to test students with the primary goal of informing educators of what their students know at that moment. However, a low Skill Check score will not prevent a student from moving forward in PowerUp.

Lexia's programs were designed based on a blended learning model, so students can continue learning new skills in the online program while receiving targeted, offline support from their teacher. The programs enable educators to review the data and determine the appropriate instructional steps, rather than making that decision automatically. This design supports flexibility in different implementation scenarios. It also allows students who may reflect mixed profiles of performance (for example, higher performance in Grammar activities, but lower performance in Comprehension) to advance, rather than halting their progress altogether.

What should I do if my student scores below 75% in Skill Checks?

PowerUp enables educators to review data, while providing flexibility to use their own knowledge of their students to determine next steps. If a student's Overall Score on the Skill Checks is below 75%, review the student's Rate and Accuracy and their Student Detailed Skills Report to see skill areas where they may need additional support.

When the student's Skill Check scores are mixed across skills, try reinforcing or evaluating skills through instructional resources like Lexia Lessons or Skill Builders as the student progresses through PowerUp. If a student is still not advancing in the program after additional support, you may consider manually adjusting their program placement.
