Mrs. Stewart made such a difference in my life! Back in first grade, when I was struggling with reading and speech, she always there cheering me on, helping me, and reminding me that I could do it. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to push through, and because of her, I started believing in myself.

She didn’t just teach me—She inspired me, and was one of the people that influenced my decision to become a teacher. The way she supported me and believed in me has stuck with me, and I’ll always be grateful for her kindness and patience. I am so grateful for amazing teachers!

Celebrating the Impact of Dr. Janet Matthews: A True Educational Pioneer

Today, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Janet Matthews, a remarkable professor who has profoundly influenced my journey in education. Dr. Matthews was the one who planted the seed that I could design and start a charter school that would change the way kids learn for the better—and I did!

Dr. Matthews taught me that things can be different. She introduced us to the idea that there are people breaking the mold and thinking differently about what good education looks like. Her encouragement and support made me feel valued and empowered. She inspired me and my classmates to find our voices, think outside the box, and not be afraid to try, fail, or succeed.

One of the most impactful lessons from Dr. Matthews was her emphasis on reading about pioneers and inspiring educators. I remember reading “The Power of Their Ideas” by Deborah Meier. This book broadened my perspective and fueled my passion for innovative education. A pivotal moment in my college experience was a group assignment where each team created a charter school proposal. This exercise challenged us to think about what could be, rather than what has always been done.

Dr. Matthew’s Philosophy of Education class was only one semester but her influence has been a driving force in my journey. I am forever grateful for the wisdom and inspiration she has shared. Her belief in me and her guidance have been instrumental in helping me pursue my dreams.

Thank you, Dr. Janet Matthews, for being a beacon of inspiration and for making a lasting impact on the world of education.
