Core5 Skill Checks: Student Experience
Overview
Skill Checks are curriculum-embedded assessments that check student understanding at strategic points in Lexia Core5
Reading. Skill Checks are designed to be brief, and are closely tied to the curriculum.
This article gives educators an overview of the student experience for Core5 Skill Checks.
How should I introduce Skill Checks to students?
If your students have worked in Core5 before, you can introduce the new Skill Checks with the following language:
"Now when you are almost done with your level in Core5, you’ll get to show the skills you’ve learned one more time, for each activity. It will be similar to the rest of Core5, but with a few changes.
Instead of two parts in each level, there are now three parts. The new, third part is called "Skill Checks" and has just one unit for each activity. These units will focus on what you just learned in Core5, but the program will not tell you whether your answers are right or wrong. I will get to see how you did to help me know all the things you've learned and the ways your reading has improved!"
When do students encounter Skill Checks?
Skill Checks happen at the end of each level in Core5. After students have finished the learning content for all five activities, they move on to the Skill Checks for that level. Students can complete the Skill Check for each activity in any order they choose.
