How does Core5 Auto Placement Work?
Auto Placement begins automatically the first time a student logs into Core5 (unless someone manually assigns the student to a level using myLexia). Auto Placement uses content from Core5 word recognition (phonological awareness/phonics/structural analysis) and comprehension (vocabulary/comprehension) activities to identify the most appropriate starting point for student learning in the program.
Students begin Auto Placement based on their assigned grade in myLexia (see table at the end of this article).
At each level, the student completes a unit from two different activities. If the student demonstrates proficiency in both units, they advance to activities in higher levels. If the student does not demonstrate proficiency in either unit, they are dropped to material in lower levels.
For example, a student in Grade 2 (or Year 3) starts Auto Placement in Level 10 and is given two activities. The student can:
-
Advance to Level 11, if accuracy in both activities is above 90%.
-
Be placed in Level 10, if accuracy in one or both activities is between 66% - 89%.
-
Drop to Level 9 or lower, if accuracy in one or both activities is below 65%.
The student will continue to advance or drop levels, depending on accuracy (without repeating levels) until a placement is made.
Tip
Core5 AutoPlacement does not require a license. As long as there are licenses available, students will gain a license the first time they log in after completing AutoPlacement.
How can I tell if a student is in Auto Placement?
In Auto Placement activities, the Information Apple is blue (if the Information Apple is red or white, the student is not currently in Auto Placement). Also, when students are working in Auto Placement, they are not given feedback after responses.
Do students have to finish Auto Placement in one class period?
If a student does not complete Auto Placement in one sitting, their work is saved. When the student logs in again, Auto Placement will continue.
View which students have started, but have not finished Auto Placement by going to the Manage > Students page, looking at the Reading Status section, and filtering for In Placement.
How do I review class and student Auto Placement results?
Review your class results in the class Auto Placement report. This report shows whether students were placed at, above, or below their matriculated grade level, allowing you to review whether each student’s grade level performance aligns with other classroom indicators.
Review details about individual students' Auto Placement on the Auto Placement Detail report for each student.
-
In myLexia, select Reading.
-
Select Reports & Resources.
-
Select the Auto Placement card to view the Class Auto Placement Report.
Information in the Class Auto Placement Report table includes: Placement date, student’s grade in myLexia during Auto Placement, placement level, and total minutes to complete.
-
For a detailed view of individual students, select a student name from the table to see the Auto Placement Detail report for that student.
To place in a level, students should be at least High or Medium accuracy in both activities (unless they are placed into Level 1).
Note
If the student performed below 50% accuracy on the first unit, Not Taken is displayed.
N/A is displayed for Comprehension in Levels 5 and 11, where both activities fall in the Word Recognition strand.
I’m not sure the Auto Placement tool correctly placed a student
If a student’s placement level seems higher or lower than expected, Lexia recommends using the Student Skill Progress report to review their current performance.
-
From your Class Overview, select a student name to view the student's overview page.
-
On the Student Overview page, select the Skills Report button.
-
On the Student Skills Report, check the student’s Accuracy, Rate and Skill Check scores (if available) for each activity.
If all or most activities demonstrate Low Accuracy and Slow Rate and if Skill Check scores are consistently below 75%, you may look at the student placement details and consider whether an adjustment to their placement is warranted.
If all five activities have High Accuracy and Fast Rate, you may consider adjusting the student’s placement to a higher level, based on other assessment information for that student.
Should I have a student take Auto Placement again?
If you suspect a student's placement resulted in a significant discrepancy between their optimal learning point and their current program placement, you may reset their Auto Placement. See How to Reset Individual Core5 Students.
Caution
Resetting placement permanently deletes all progress and history for the student's account. Lexia recommends that you print or save any necessary reports and certificates before doing so.
You may want to prepare students for the possibility of repeating content by explaining that reviewing information is a way to support their learning and strengthen their skills.
Sample Script: “You may review some work that you've seen before in Core5 or work on a new level that you haven’t tried yet. This is to make sure you are working on the right things to make you a strong and confident reader!”
I don’t want a student to take Auto Placement
Before the student logs in for the first time, you can manually assign the student to a level. See Change Student Placement in Core5 for more information.
